Are you living in a BLUE state (or Blue state of mind) but seeing only RED since the election? Or maybe it feels like you've landed on some distant planet inhabited by bizarre aliens and can't find your way home.
Let’s face it. These are stressful times and there's plenty of bad news to keep Blue-minded people like you and me absolutely furious, profoundly shaken and seriously strung out for years to come. Mental health professionals have already dubbed the syndrome: Post-Election Stress Disorder.
How do you plan to handle all of that pent-up anger, disappointment, outrage, frustration, despair or painful heartache churning around inside, making you anxious, irritable and unable to sleep?
Will you be able to continue getting up every morning with a smile on your face, love in your heart and that same wonderful sense of optimism and good cheer that once kept you going?
If this dark cloud should linger, what effect will chronic, long-term stress have on your health--both mental and physical?
Is there more that you can do to help stop the madness?
VoicingBlue was specifically created to help Blue-minded people effectively manage their post-election stress by providing:
a safe, non-judgmental refuge away from the incessant drone of negative news and endless arguments for venting your anger, sharing your heartache, and putting things into perspective
an introduction to practical, easy-to-learn methods for effectively managing stress, boosting positivity, and regaining that sense of hope and optimism that makes life so meaningful
insight and advice on using diet, nutritional supplements and physical exercise to reduce anxiety, lift mood, increase mental alertness, and strengthen the immune system
guidance and encouragement for raising your voice and putting your passion and talents to work on helping to bring about important political, social and economic changes.
As a mental health professional, wellness coach and stress expert (see 'BIO'), I’ve helped hundreds of people work thru difficult feelings, learn to manage their stress and improve their mood. I've also helped many people re-direct their lives in healthy, constructive ways, despite some very challenging circumstances. I'm also a life-long Democrat and since the election I've found myself feeling utterly outraged, even despondent, with the installment of Trump's right-wing agenda. Iknow what you're going through.
Here's an up-lifting thought to keep in mind. Many political observers suggest that this swing to the hard Right will eventually be followed by a fierce back-lash--a Great Blue Tide--that will sweep across America and the rest of the world. In the meantime, we'll all be needing some extra help dealing with the onslaught of bad news.
If you're still seeing red, here are some active ways you can reduce your post-election stress and elect to be happy again:
1. SHARE YOUR FEELINGS Blue-minded people share their feelings. It's what we do. We seem to know instinctively that it's better to vent our anger, fear, frustration and other negative emotions rather than keep them bottled up inside. Start by ‘outing’ the rage, that is, become keenly aware of your negative reactions and the triggers that produce them, and then find creative ways of discharging the negative emotions that arise from within. The sooner you do this, the better. Otherwise, you risk impulsively acting on your feelings or blurting out something you may later regret. Even worse, if left unattended, this negativity can trigger a stress response in the body leading to serious health problems, such as migraine headaches, anxiety attacks, or GI issues. Negative emotions that are chronically under-expressed also create something else--an opportunity for resentment, intolerance, and even racism to take hold in the psyche. Everyone needs to pay attention to this one. After all, it's what got us into this mess in the first place.
2. EXPRESS YOUR COMPASSION, INWARDLY Blue people also have big hearts. We respond compassionately to those in need of help. This time around, however, we're the ones in need of help! While it's not unusual to "see red" when things go bad, it's usually short-lived. Unfortunately, many Blue-minded people have taken an emotional nose dive since the election and continue suffering from serious bouts of anger, anxiety, fear and despair due to the ongoing stress. You don’t want to stay stuck in this swirling vortex of negativity for too long. One of the most important (and compassionate) ways of managing post-election stress is to protect yourself from the bad news coming your way. If you’re like me, you're spending way too much time glued to the TV or Internet. It's OK to stay abreast of the news, but constantly throwing fuel on the fire won't help. For starters, simply remove yourself from the source of your emotional over-load. Less exposure means greater peace-of-mind. In short, moderate your exposure to disheartening news while simultaneously finding ways to quiet your mind and soothe your soul. Take some of that compassion you have for others and express it INWARDLY. Love thyself. You'll be glad that you did.
3. RAISE YOUR VOICE Even though Blue-minded people are, by and large, very calm and caring, we sometimes react strongly to things like greed, injustice, neglect and violence. You probably already have practical outlets for handling strong emotions and reducing stress, such as meditation, yoga, jogging, music, or gardening. But these are dark times and there's plenty of irritating news to keep us all thoroughly agitated for the foreseeable future.
Here are some Blue-spirited ways of channeling your anger, frustrations and anxiety so that you can use this energy as a creative means for affecting much-needed change:
get involved in protest marches, rallies and strikes
call your representatives
start or join an Indivisible group in your community
donate to the ACLU, Sierra Club or any number of other Blue causes
vote with your dollar--support Blue-friendly businesses and boycott Trump products and establishments
run for office
knit Pussy Hats
liberally indulge those political satirists, cartoonists and comics who keep us all from going bonkers (see 'Posts').
4. SEE DEEPLY Blue-minded people often have a deeper understanding for the inter-relatedness of things. For example, we tend to see below the surface differences that keep people apart while recognizing the deeper shared values that tie us together. Out of this ability to "see deeply" arises the many “virtues” or character strengths often associated with being Blue—empathy, tolerance, forgiveness, altruism, cooperation.
There are many mindfulness practices that can help you see more deeply. These practices drop you "out of your head", where criticism and debate are always strenuously at work, and down into the relaxing pleasures of your body. These practices also help enhance your ability to simply observe, be more present in the moment and rest in the peaceful equanimity of ‘choiceless awareness‘ where you can more easily accept things as they are and embrace the world with a kinder, gentler heart.
I can introduce you to a variety of mindfulness practices and help you decide which are best suited for you at this particular time. I also offer a special guided imagery exercise called SEEINGDEEPLY. You can use this exercise to drop out of stressful thoughts and worries and into the "calming waters" of your body, whenever you feel the need for some instant relief. Guided imagery exercises like this have proven effective at helping people relax, boost their immune system, and elevate their mood.
